"The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want." Psalm 23:1
As little as the lamb can help the shepherd in trivial things but
must depend upon him for all important needs, even less can a man direct
himself in the concerns of salvation, or find comfort, help and
guidance.
Rather must he depend upon God, his shepherd, for all things, for God
is infinitely more willing and active in doing all He can for His sheep
than the most loving shepherd.
Christ is the gentle and loving shepherd who goes into the wilderness
to seek the lost and fainting lamb, and, when he finds it, he lays it
on his shoulder rejoicing. Who would not follow such a shepherd gladly!
The gospel is the voice of the shepherd by which he calls his lambs.
From this we learn that we receive grace, forgiveness and eternal
salvation. The voice of the gospel is precious to the sheep of Christ.
They listen to it eagerly, understand it, and rule their lives by it.
They do not heed a voice which sounds strange, but reject and flee from
it.
Prayer
Almighty and Eternal God, enable us, we heartily beseech You, to know
and praise Your dear Son, as holy Simeon did, who took him in his arms,
knew and confessed Him; through Your own Son Jesus Christ. Amen
