Luther: How I Love Your Law

"The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb." Psalm 19:7,8,10

This Psalm speaks of the law of the Lord, which (through the gospel) makes itself loved. To those who desire it, it is more precious than treasure and sweeter than honey. It is undefiled, faithful, right, true, converting the soul, making wise and rejoicing the heart. This is the wonder of the Holy Spirit, who makes all things pleasing which were formerly displeasing.

For what do men seek more zealously than riches and pleasure! Now, however, love for the law of God becomes greater than love for riches or pleasure. As soon as the Spirit comes He not only makes the law of God bearable but also enables us to long for it, so that it becomes more precious than anything we desire and more enjoyable than any pleasure.

It is evident from this passage how eminent a prophet David was, what appropriate words, figures and parables he used. He is incomparable in his ability to present profound truths in short simple words. This, then, is the fruit of evangelical preaching --- the love of righteousness and the hate of all godless ways.

Prayer

Almighty God, enable us to invoke no desire but Your praise and honor when we hear something melodious or sense something pleasant.

May the duplicity, falsehood and vain show of the world not seduce us. Amen
