Heidelberg -- Third Petition
Which is the third petition?
Answer: "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven"; that is, grant that we and all men may renounce our own will,
and without murmuring obey Your will, which is only good;
that every one may attend to, and perform the duties of his station and calling,
as willingly and faithfully as the angels do in heaven.
Barnabas' Notes:
Grant that we and all men may renounce our own will.
Then Jesus told His disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?" (Matthew 16:24-26)
"For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in the present age." (Titus 2:11,12)
And without murmuring obey Your will, which is only good.
"Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true) and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord." (Ephesians 5:9, 10)
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2)
