Heidelberg -- First Petition
Which is the first petition?
Answer: "Hallowed be Your name"; that is, grant us, first, rightly to know You,
and to sanctify, glorify and praise You,
in all Your works, in which Your power, wisdom, goodness, justice, mercy and truth, are clearly displayed;
and further also, that we may so order and direct our whole lives, our thoughts, words and actions, that Your name may never be blasphemed, but rather honored and praised on our account.
Barnabas' Notes:
Grant us, first, rightly to know You,
"Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, since You have given Him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom You have given Him.
And this is eternal life, that they know You the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." (John 17:1-3)
"Thus says the LORD: Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this,
that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD." (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
"But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. (Jeremiah 31:33,34)
and to sanctify, glorify and praise You,
"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David." (Luke 1:68,69)
"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!
For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?
Or who has given a gift to Him that He might be repaid?
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen." (Romans 11:33-36)
that Your Name may be honored and praised on our account.
"Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your Name give glory
because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.
Why should the nations say, 'Where, now, is their god?'
But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases."
